DFENS: Diffusion Chronometry Using Finite Elements and Nested Sampling

چکیده
In order to reconcile petrological and geophysical observations of magmatic processes in the temporal domain, uncertainties diffusion timescales need be rigorously assessed. Here, we present a new chronometry method: Diffusion using Finite Elements Nested Sampling (DFENS). This method combines finite element numerical model with nested sampling Bayesian inversion, meaning that parameters contributing timescale estimates can obtained from multiple elements used better constrain individual timescales. Uncertainties associated reduced by accounting for covariance uncertainty structure rather than assuming they are independent each other. We applied DFENS products Skuggafjöll eruption Bárðarbunga volcanic system Iceland, which contains zoned macrocrysts olivine plagioclase record shared history. Olivine provide consistent pre-eruptive mixing mush disaggregation less 1 year. The goes some way toward improving our ability address timescales, but efforts still made understand other systematic sources such as crystal morphology, appropriate choice coefficients, initial conditions, growth, context

Emotion Editing using Finite Elements
This paper describes the prototype of a facial expression editor. In contrast to existing systems the presented editor takes advantage of both medical data for the simulation and the consideration of facial anatomy during the definition of muscle groups. The C1-continuous geometry and the high degree of abstraction for the expression editing sets this system apart from others. Using finite elem...
متن کاملModel selection and parameter inference in phylogenetics using Nested Sampling
Bayesian inference methods rely on numerical algorithms for both model selection and parameter inference. In general, these algorithms require a high computational effort to yield reliable inferences. One of the major challenges in phylogenetics regards the estimation of the marginal likelihood. This quantity is commonly used for comparing different evolutionary models, but its calculation, eve...
متن کاملNested sampling with demons
This article looks at Skilling’s nested sampling from a physical perspective and interprets it as a microcanonical demon algorithm. Using key quantities of statistical physics we investigate the performance of nested sampling on complex systems such as Ising, Potts and protein models. We show that releasing multiple demons helps to smooth the truncated prior and eases sampling from it because t...
متن کاملProperties of nested sampling
SUMMARY Nested sampling is a simulation method for approximating marginal likelihoods proposed by Skilling (2006). We establish that nested sampling has an approximation error that vanishes at the standard Monte Carlo rate and that this error is asymptotically Gaussian. We show that the asymptotic variance of the nested sampling approximation typically grows linearly with the dimension of the p...
متن کاملBending, Buckling and Vibration of a Functionally Graded Porous Beam Using Finite Elements
This study presents the effect of porosity on mechanical behaviors of a power distribution functionally graded beam. The Euler-Bernoulli beam is assumed to describe the kinematic relations and constitutive equations. Because of technical problems, particle size shapes and micro-voids are created during the fabrication which should be taken into consideration. Two porosity models are proposed. T...
